Though Black Duck was founded in 2003, we've been very much in an "innovation" and "startup" phase since mid-2014 when CEO Lou Shipley took the reins. Black Duck is Lou's sixth New England tech startup. Over that short time span we have gone through dramatic change in terms of our product development, market focus, market messaging, and very importantly, our sales model. In short we are a New Company and are facing all of the opportunities and challenges of a New Company. We look forward to an interactive discussion that will be led by Lou and other executives on how we are transforming Black Duck by changing our market focus from open source compliance to open source security where the opportunity for customer acquisition and revenue growth is much greater; and by embracing and perfecting a high-velocity sales model pioneered in Boston that is the envy of and being copied by Silicon Valley. We expect our guests will be very interested in what can be achieved when product innovation is matched with skillful sales execution. Of course we'll take a bit of time to tour our high-energy, open office space, a talk about our expansion.

Session Title: The Inbound Revolution

When HubSpot Co-founders Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah introduced inbound in 2006, it was with the mission of reaching the world in a more helpful and human way. Inbound offered businesses an alternative to traditional tactics like cold calling, billboard ads, direct mailing, and other intrusive "outbound" methods. It instead focused on creating quality content that pulled people toward your company and product, where they naturally wanted to be, allowing marketers and salespeople to attract, convert, close and delight over time.

Now, nearly ten years later, that simple mission has become a global movement. With thousands of customers around the world, millions of blog visitors in several major languages, and the annual INBOUND event (which attracted 14,000+ registered attendees in 2015), we are in the midst of a revolution.

On April 27th, join HubSpot VP of Marketing Cindy Goodrich as she discusses inbound, HubSpot and what it takes to build a pillar company with a vibrant culture. Afterwords, you'll get an inside look at our award-winning culture with a full tour of our awesome new office space at Two Canal.

Special Message to Attendees:
Please come directly to HubSpot's new offices at 2 Canal Park, Cambridge, MA 02141, across the street from our headquarters in the Davenport.
  • If you enter from First Street, you can walk down the long hallway and follow signage to the session.

Idea Validation Workshop w/TCN & The Meme

Session Title: Idea Validation Workshop w/TCN & The Meme

**Please register for both the 8:30 and 10:30 session to get the most value out of this workshop. This is a three hour workshop ending at 11:30am**

Coming up with product ideas is easy. Coming up with good product ideas is harder.

Even good ideas are often based on assumptions: assumptions that a product or service will match people's needs; that users will understand, engage with, and adopt them because it provides meaningful value and integrates with their lives.

The workshop is run in collaboration between TCN and The MEME Design, a group that helps create and validate good product ideas by testing those assumptions, and helping entrepreneurs refine and drive them to success.

Using the MEME’s processes and expert tools, you will get a chance to learn key techniques to validate your own products and methods, with a select few even getting the opportunity to workshop their own product and service ideas in a group, with The MEME’s expert help.

At this session you will

  • Learn how to go deep on and understand better who you’re designing for.
  • Use our tools to look at the chosen problem or need from multiple angles in order to generate more and better solutions.
  • Learn ways to isolate the most critical product or service features from more peripheral ones.
  • See how to create a prototype strategy that will help to test whether the product resonates with users in the intended way.

Suggested Audience:
Entrepreneurs, Founders, Innovators, Product Managers, UX Managers, Designers, Developers and Engineers

Session Title: Economics Meeting Ecology - Economically viable products solving environmental challenges

The "wow" in our presentation comes from having a simple idea with global impact: Solving the plastic bag litter issue. We will provide the audience with the history of how ECOgrade was invented. We will enlighten the group on how we have not only developed a sustainable product which addresses a major environmental issue, but also a sustainable supply chain, gaining recognition for bringing back jobs to local bag manufacturers. We will also share some of the testing we have done on ECOgrade. Finally, we will provide an inside look at some of the new products in our pipeline which extend our current product offerings.

How do you take an ancient art form, traditionally handmade by master craftsmen, and make it accessible for today's customers?

At Artaic, our goal is to make ordering custom tile as simple as purchasing stock product. We modernize the creation of architecturally compelling mosaics through fast design iterations, free sampling, and American robotic production.

As part of this session we will lead attendees through our entire process - from design to fabrication. Attendees will get an up close look at Tessera, our proprietary design software, and each part of our robotic manufacturing process. At the end, attendees will have a deeper understanding of our process and how we are able to quickly and efficiently produce large-scale mosaics for clients such as MIT, Disney, Legal Seafoods, MGM Resorts International, the Ritz-Carlton, and more.

Idea Validation Workshop w/TCN & The Meme (cont.)
Limited Capacity seats available

Who should attend:
Entrepreneurs, Founders, Innovators, Product Managers, UX Managers, Designers, Developers and Engineers

Session Title: Rethinking the Smart City - Where IoT Vision Meets Actionable Insights

This NewCo session will show our technology and how we've built easily customizable solar "brains" that can host different sensors. This will also involve a tour around our shop / office space. We will talk about the experiences at the Media Lab and working with city solutions that lead to the founding of Soofa. This involves the issues within a city and our general frustration with major incumbents being the only "smart city" companies. We will explain our plans and visions for our future direction, as well as gathering participant feedback around what they feel is an issue within the city or what aspects could use improvement. All throughout this questions and open discussion would be welcomed - we hope to create a good conversation among the group around the uses / needs of urban environments. This will definitely incorporate robust discussions about the future, our strategy process involves rethinking the way virtually any public space-based thing works. On a high level, we are very clear about our direction and issues being solved. But, we always wonder, is there a huge issue in cities that we are missing? Hopefully this session could encourage everyone to view the urban experience through an alien lens, rather than accepting things because they are "how things are". A good storyteller can draw people out of their everyday experiences and push them to consider regular things in entirely new ways.

Session Title: Mobile Payments & The Cashier-Less Future

Even the optimists say that NFC based mobile payments are going to take years to break the 10% adoption mark. But, behind the scenes, another form of mobile payments is already there. Mobilely-initiated payments (such as Starbucks' Mobile Order & Pay) are capturing consumer's imaginations, and their dollars. Order ahead is mobile payments, just without the line, without the hardware, without the POS integrations and without the cashier interaction. It's not only growing faster than NFC, it's pulling mobile-savvy customers away from the counter altogether. Rapid7 will take attendees for a (metaphorical) ride on the trail blazing track of the Rapid7 Express train to IT security market leadership. Our company was named after the train our founders took to work while they developed their vision for simple, innovative solutions that would help customers face the increasing threats of an evolving IT landscape - and our NewCo event theme will bring that story to life.

Participants will convene in the café at Rapid7's 100 Summer St. Boston headquarters to hear opening remarks from CEO Corey Thomas, including Corey's perspective on:

1) Rapid7's history and the series of major milestones the company has achieved over the past 12 months -- IPO and strategic acquisitions among them,
2) security?s evolution as he sees it, including what lies ahead for the security market given the dynamic nature of the threat landscape, and
3) Rapid7?s and his passion for security and view on the biggest challenges facing organizations when it comes to dealing with cybercrime.

Next, Rapid7's Chief People Officer will introduce the group to the company's Core Values and talk about why and how they were chosen, why they are important and how to go about living by them -- a discussion that emphasizes the importance of fostering and maintaining a rockin' corporate culture.

Then, the group will be divided into teams and they will receive a special map for the NewCo event - one that resembles a railway system map - that highlights Rapid7?s core values and / or significant moments in the company's history. On a tour of the facility, at stops along the way, participants will have the unique opportunity to hear from (and Q&A with) various Conductors on the Rapid7 team about the core values and what they mean to them personally. As an added bonus, participants will play a game of Rapid7 Bingo to keep things fun and engaging all along the way.

The experience will give attendees an interactive, inside look at how one of the hottest infosec companies in the game is using analytics and data-driven innovation, along with a group of the smartest and most fun security industry pros and researchers, to detect, respond to, and protect against the most advanced and sophisticated cyber threats facing organizations today - and in the future.

John Simon, a prominent venture capitalist and entrepreneur, and Margaret Hall, a nonprofit executive with deep knowledge of effectiveness and capacity, joined forces when they saw that despite Boston’s growth in both wealth and the nonprofit sector, persistent challenges and service gaps remained. Low-income children and families were falling through the cracks. They saw for-profit entrepreneurs scale innovations quickly while social entrepreneurs struggled to scale impact-driven models beyond one or two communities. These innovative programs with significant, proven results were often unable to replicate in new cities where they faced a crowded, competitive space and lacked knowledge of the local landscape. What they needed was an on the ground partner -- an “escort” who knew the local community and could help forge a path toward success.

In response, Margaret and John created the GreenLight Fund to provide an important piece of infrastructure that was missing in Boston and other urban areas. To date, we've imported 9 high-performing, innovative and effective nonprofit programs into Boston. We help our investors navigate their philanthropy giving by identifying the best of the best organizations to invest in.

At this session you will get an inside look into venture philanthropy. You'll learn about our localize approach and meet the social entrepreneurs from our current portfolio. Attendees will also get an early glimpse of what is to come with our next Boston investment before it's announced to the public.

Session Title: A New Vision for Building a Stronger and Thriving Workforce

Session Description
Today’s employees are looking to the organizations for which they work for more than just a pay check. They want to know the business they work for shares their values, acts responsibly, and cares about them professionally and personally. Although many employees say they want these things from their employer, few employees have been able to identify employers that match all of these criterion. This is exactly why only 13% of all employees around the world are actively engaged in the work they do every day. Organizations that have been able to crack the code on purpose and meaning according to John Kotter and James Heskett “outperform their counterparts with 400% higher revenues.” Join WeSpire Founder and CEO Susan Hunt Stevens for a session exploring the importance of providing employees with a sense purpose and meaning, and how it can help businesses meet, and exceed, company goals. Find out how you can empower your most valuable asset, your employees, to make your business a leader within your category. As today’s diverse workforce looks to their employer for fulfillment, companies should be equipped with the tools necessary to empower employees to make a difference. This session will also include a demo of the WeSpire employee engagement platform demonstrating how through behavior change science, positive psychology, game mechanics and social mechanisms we’ve been able to leverage technology to influence employee engagement by providing employees with a broader sense of purpose and meaning.
