Session Title: The GreenLight Fund: A VC for the Nonprofit Sector
The GreenLight Fund has been catalyzing community change for low-income children, youth and families in urban areas for over a decade. John Simon, a prominent venture capitalist and entrepreneur, and Margaret Hall, a nonprofit executive with deep knowledge of effectiveness and capacity, joined forces when they saw that despite Boston’s growth in both wealth and the nonprofit sector, persistent challenges and service gaps remained. Low-income children and families were falling through the cracks. They saw for-profit entrepreneurs scale innovations quickly while social entrepreneurs struggled to scale impact-driven models beyond one or two communities. These innovative programs with significant, proven results were often unable to replicate in new cities where they faced a crowded, competitive space and lacked knowledge of the local landscape. What they needed was an on the ground partner -- an “escort” who knew the local community and could help forge a path toward success.
In response, Margaret and John created the GreenLight Fund to provide an important piece of infrastructure that was missing in Boston and other urban areas. To date, we've imported 9 high-performing, innovative and effective nonprofit programs into Boston. We help our investors navigate their philanthropy giving by identifying the best of the best organizations to invest in.
At this session you will get an inside look into venture philanthropy. You'll learn about our localize approach and meet the social entrepreneurs from our current portfolio. Attendees will also get an early glimpse of what is to come with our next Boston investment before it's announced to the public.
